Last week some of us at Eventility had the pleasure of attending Social Media Marketing 2013 (organised by Our Social Times), probably the most interesting marketing event of the year. Expert speakers delivered knowledge-packed presentations covering everything from content and influencer marketing, to ‘native advertising’, video marketing and the use of humour on Twitter.
The importance of content marketing is growing, with 25% of marketers’ budgets spent on developing engaging content. As this growth led to a devaluation in content value as a competitive advantage, we learned that understanding the true goals of content from educational to entertaining, finding inspiration in all areas and aiming for ‘home runs’ are the tools that will deliver real value in our campaigns.
Other topics we found particularly interesting were the significant expansion in video marketing on channels such as Vine and Instagram, the key ingredients of a highly shareable video, the easing in Facebook’s competition rules and how social campaigns can be integrated with other digital and offline channels.

Dom Wright from Yorkshire Tea showed us their fantastic Yorkshire Tea Train blogger event, and actor, comedian, director and social media evangelist David Schneider, brightened everyone’s day with great examples using social media, in particular Twitter.

How To Host An Environmentally Friendly Event

These days, everyone is concerned about the impact we are having on the environment and wants to do their bit to help. Below are some helpful tips from Ecco Magazine on how to host an environmentally friendly event that will benefit both you and the world.

We have put together a few tips to help you host this year’s most stylish shindig in your area with as little impact on the environment as possible. The Venue

One of the most important aspects of your low impact soiree is LOCATION.

  • Not hosting the party at your home? Then have the event at a central location accessible to most guests. This will help decrease your impact as well as your guests’ impact on the environment by reducing carbon emissions.
  • The great outdoors. Select a location outdoors so your guests can breathe fresh air and party outdoors like its 1999. Utilise the Earth’s natural resources (air, wind and natural beauty). This will also reduce energy usage associated with having an air conditioning unit.

The Décor

  • No need to spend money on fancy decorations that you will more than likely throw out. Instead use household vases to display blossoming flowers or decorated cardboard boxes to display art. Be creative.
  • Avoid using incandescent lamps these use a lot of energy. Instead opt for energy efficient alternatives: Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) or Light Emitting Diode (LED). They are more environmental friendly alternatives and reduce your energy usage by up to 75%.

The Food

  • Cook local. Your menu should consist of locally grown and seasonal food. Purchase all the provisions you will need from local producers, most snacks, fruit and meats can be found locally. You will reduce your Carbon Footprint when you buy food produced locally.
  • Incorporate your backyard garden provisions. Home grown treats are a delight at any event. This shows the versatility and thoughtfulness of the hosts.
  • Always wanted to try organic foods? Well this is a great time to go organic. Incorporate organic foods like: peppers, celery and more into the event’s menu. Tell your guests their tasty treats are local and organic, you will definitely get a round of applause for your pesticide-free, locally grown cuisine.

The Invite

  • Printed invites are so blasé. Instead use greener, online alternatives like organisation website Eventility; since printed invites carry a larger carbon footprint. You can store all the empty bottles collected throughout the night and give them to your local beverage producers or recycling facility.

  • Carpooling: Persuade your friends to carpool and share a ride. This will reduce the amount of carbon emission accumulated during the ride to your party. It also provides for responsible driving.
  • Utilise your old china and silverware you never get to use, this will definitely give the event that extra stylish touch.

4 Incredibly Easy Ways to Use Social Media to Boost Events Infographic

As you probably already know, events and social media are a match made in heaven. Online platforms are ready-made for event management, whether it’s organising or promoting an event, encouraging engagement on the day itself or extending the lifetime value of the event for days, weeks and even months afterwards.

1. Organising an Event

It’s crucially important not to think of social media just in terms of promotion. That would be a big mistake. Social media can also play an important role in the organisation of events by, for example, providing an easy way to invite people and collect RSVPs. This has the added bonus that once your invitees register, it’s easy to keep them updated and send reminders via email or SMS.

Social media also enables you to involve attendees in the actual organisation process. By asking your audience to vote for their favourite talks, speakers, bands or activities, you can build up an event programme that you know people will enjoy. For example, you could offer rewards for attendees that check-in at different locations within the venue using Foursquare or Facebook, or even run a social media scavenger hunt where attendees need to check in to a series of locations.

4. Extending the Lifetime Value of an Event

Even after the event has finished the buzz doesn’t need to stop. Uploading videos, photos and presentations to social networks will keep the event fresh in the mind of attendees and may entice others to come to future events. People tend to stay engaged for 1-2 days after an event, so that’s your window of opportunity to encourage them to talk about it online, or share your content.

What’s more, social media can be a valuable source of feedback. Take time to ask attendees what they thought about the venue, the refreshments, speakers and entertainment. You’re bound to learn something that will help you improve things next time around – and, most likely, you’ll get lots of positive feedback which you can share, or possibly even use on your marketing materials.

Our first installment finished off by discussing the six stages of online community development and how you can identify them. Now, it’s important to understand the impact that guiding someone from being a ‘lurker’ to a ‘brand advocate’ can have when trying to organise and promote your event.

There are three stages of any event – the before, during and after. When used correctly, social media is an excellent tool that can be used for promotion, engagement and even extending the life of an event.

BeforeThis is the time when you are no doubt going to want to promote and raise awareness of your event. Social media can help you to:

  • Engage your audience and create chatter
  • Encourage social introductions through likes and shares
  • Target influencers you wouldn’t normally have access to
  • Increase success – people are 71% more likely to buy from a company if they have been referred to via social media

DuringWhilst your event is taking place you want to engage with your attendees as much as possible. There are a number of ways you can use social media during this time to actively encourage participation from everyone there:

  • Create a Twitter hashtag and encourage anyone tweeting about the event to use it
  • Maintain interest – good quality and interesting content is quick and easy to post and keeps you at the forefront of people’s minds
  • Go viral – competitions are a great way to encourage people to like and retweet content that will then be seen by their connections
  • Live streaming of the event can be watched by those who couldn’t attend and uploading highlights onto a YouTube video can be used for future promotions

AfterJust because your event is over it doesn’t mean that the hype has to die down. Social media is a great way of extending the life of your event and there are a number of ways you can ensure that people carry on talking about it:

  • Videos – with 800 million users on YouTube you potential audience is massive
  • Blogging – posting a write-up of your event is a great way to remind people about it, inform those who couldn’t attend and even create excitement about the next one
  • Photos – people love seeing photos and they are easy to notice and share on social media platforms
  • Ask for feedback – as well as finding out what people thought of your recent event, asking what they would like to see next time is a sure fire way to guarantee getting people through the door

How to Keep Your Eventility Group Thriving

There are a number of simple tricks you can employ to make sure that you keep your members interested, active and aware of your upcoming activities.

Encourage Members to Participate           

Promoting your group members into more active roles is a great way to encourage them to participate in discussions more regularly. The Power of Online Communities for Local Businesses Infographic

Social networks have long been seen as a ‘leveller’, enabling local businesses to compete with big brands for a decent share of customer attention. In many respects local businesses are better placed to take advantage of social media than big brands. They find it easier to create meaningful relationships with their customers – they might even be on first name terms – and, since the majority of their customers’ social media connections will also live locally, are well placed to benefit from recommendations.

The fact that there are over 1 billion smart-phone users and that 40% of mobile searches are for local businesses gives an indication of the importance of having a strong web presence and making your business easy to find.

One of the key things the infographic highlights is the sheer number of small businesses that are already using social networks and gaining new customers as a result. Almost three quarters of small businesses use Facebook and over half are using LinkedIn and Twitter. Added to that, research by Manta suggests that 78% of small businesses are gaining a significant proportion of new customers through social media.

Generation Y in particular are using social networks to inform purchase decisions, with 61% turning to social media to decide where to go when going out. Online reviews also play a significant role in this, with 52% saying that positive online reviews make them more likely to use a local business.

Promotions offer a great way to reward existing customers and to attract new ones, with 73% of consumers saying they search for discounts and promotions online. They are also a great way of increasing footfall, with research showing that 59% of consumers have gone into a store or business premises as a result of finding an offer or coupon online.

Of course, social media can’t stand on its own: email marketing is another hugely valuable tool for local businesses. There are roughly 3 billion email users in the world and 19% of all time spent online is devoted to reading and responding to emails. As a marketing tool it is clearly has value – 77% of small businesses have reported email marketing increases their revenues and as a result, 85% plan to increase their use of email in 2013.

It’s also important to consider the role that SMS marketing can play. It’s estimated that 8,000,000,000,000 text messages were sent last year (yes, try saying that number!) and 90% of them were read within 3 minutes. With such a high open rate, it’s a great way to advertise promotions to your community or to send reminders – so long as you’ve got their permission to text them.
